Social Science with Secondary Education Teacher's Certification Degree Plan
Students who earn a Secondary Teacher's Certification will be certified to teach the
following social studies subjects in grades 7-12: History, Government, Economics,
Geography, Psychology and Sociology.
The Social Science with Secondary Certification degree will require you to complete
63 semester hours in their social studies teaching fields. This will include 24 hours
in history, 9 hours in political science, 9-12 hours in economics, 12 hours in geography
3 hours in psychology, 3 hours in sociology, and 3 hours of social studies teaching
methods. (See Resources Tab for details.) Many of the Social Science courses are completed as requirements of the University
Core.
Social Science with Secondary Certification student will also earn 21 hours of Secondary
Education courses. All the classes in the degree plan are designed to prepared you
to take the two required examinations through the State Board of Educator Certification
(SBEC): TExES: Pedagogy & Professional Responsibilities (EC-12) and TExES: Social
Studies (7-12).
Admissions to the College of Education Teacher Education program (TED) is required
prior to enrollment in most of the Secondary Education Courses. To apply, students
must have earned or be in the process of earning 60 credit hours with a 2.75 gpa.
